INSPIRATIONAL COLORS
As a photographer whose work is primarily in color, I am often asked if I have a favorite color. For years, I would try to think which of many colors was my favorite. The truth is that I really don’t have a favorite color. Various colors in several hues are striking to me. I realized that I am drawn to colors in a more visceral sense. Those that fascinate me are functional colors, usually married with light and captured or created within specific settings. Some favorite examples are:
Dominant Single Colors
The fiery orb of the sun setting in smoky haze
Glossy, scarlet lipstick painted on sensuous lips
The vibrant yellow of a backlit Hibiscus flower
The overwhelming green in the midst of a Vermont forest in summer
The deep azure of the Aegean Sea
The rich cobalt of the summer sky in Greece
The blinding whitewash of buildings on sunny Mykonos
The rich, polished black of a Mercedes sedan
The high-gloss ebony of a concert grand piano
Butch and Sundance running to glory in cinematic sepia
The ominous mystery of a castle in monochromatic, slate blue fog
Compelling Color Combinations
The drama of a red, white and black design in a Carnival costume or mask
The frothy white, teal and azure of waves crashing on a rocky shore
The brilliant red, white and blue of Old Glory flying on a sunny Memorial Day, or July Fourth
The radiant glow of neon signs humming in red, green and yellow
The perfectly subtle marriage of pastel pink, lavender and yellow in any composition
The blood orange, yellow and peach of a bed of tulips basking in summer sun
The variegated orange, yellow and red of Lantana flowers reaching skyward from their jade leaves, all illuminated by the setting sun.
