INSIDE, OUT(SIDE)
This digitally enhanced photograph offers a layered view of Venetian city life. An old Renaissance building appears sandwiched together with a modern clothing shop window in a single image. Carved columns and arches appear like a half-remembered landmark, while light, and shadows drift across the image reflected in the window glass.
Soft sea green, pale blue, and sun-faded pink colors glide over one another like stacked sheets of colored glass. Sharper shapes of yellow and teal cut across the building arches and trim, so your eye keeps moving, unsure whether you are looking at a church, a storefront, or reflections. The empty shirts, complete with price tags but no bodies, hint at city residents who are present only as shadowy figures somewhere in the middle.
Up close, the surface is full of textures and patterns, mixing architectural details with the grain of photo film. The image feels both carefully drawn and electronically produced, as if brush work and light had been layered together. It questions when we view our cities as images in windows, what still feels real, and where exactly is the line between inside and outside?
